New lighting fixtures can go a long way to change the ambiance of your home without breaking your bank account. By switching from old overhead lights to a few well placed track lights with a dimmer circuit you can add highlights or welcome warmth to any room. Recessed can lights are also a way to add interest by accenting shelves or artwork. Here are a few other ideas for an affordable home makeover:

Go Green
You’ve likely noticed a lot of talk about going green, and the advantages of using Light-Emitting Diode (LED) and Compact Florescent Light (CFL) lighting. Both of these types of lights are now expanding into a variety of sizes and configurations. At the present time however, neither the LED nor CFL lights are compatible with a dimmer circuit. With the variety of wattages offered you can still use these types of lights for any application – from ceiling fans to work areas. At the same time you will save a few dollars every month on your electric bill, and since these lighting options last longer than conventional incandescent bulbs, they pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time.

Up-lights
Consider adding some lighting in the floor or on bookshelves so that light is directed up, instead of down. Recessed can lights and adjustable halogen fixtures are traditionally used in ceilings and at or near the top of a wall, but they can also be used from a lower point in the room. They work very well from behind plants or artwork and can be used to highlight wall hangings or other interesting room features.

Available in metal cans or as small adjustable halogen fixtures, up-lights offer a way to add interest to your room. Generally, they are fairly inexpensive and are simple plug-ins. Up-lights work well on the floor, as focus on a wall hanging, behind a plant or other decorative element, or to bathe part of a wall in light. They can also be used atop a wardrobe.

Lamps and Shades
This idea seems too simple, but lamps of all kinds can be used to brighten, soften, or accent- which helps contribute to the overall feel of any room. Lampshades are also very important to the look and effect you want to achieve. You can spend a little or a lot. For a variety of ideas, visit your local lighting shop or spend a day at secondhand shops looking for interesting shapes and sizes of shades. Then visit a fabric shop to find contrasting or complementing fabric colors and textures – since the cost is minimal, experiment and have fun!
